Even though the time of the year when most magazines bring out their “Best of” lists has passed, Canadian music publication Mote Magazine has recently undertook the insurmountable task of listing the 30 greatest American rock bands of all time. Every week for six weeks, five more acts will be counted down until finally the top five will be revealed. So far fifteen acts have been named.
According to list compiler Trent McMartin, who also writes for Monsters and Critics, choices were made based on impact, acclaim, popularity and his own biasness. Though it was made clear by Trent that selling millions of records and having a large fan base was important, it was not a prerequisite to make his list.
“USAToday.com recently compiled a ‘Greatest American Rock list’ based on fan votes but the inclusion of such acts as Journey, Queensryche and the Eagles on that list made me want to come up with one that better reflects the diversity of American rock and roll,” said Trent in a recent statement.
“No list is the right one but come on, Journey?” he added.
The first fifteen acts have already been made known and though many have bjected to some of the choices, as seen by the comments left on Mote Magazine’s website, the overall feeling is that the artists listed, while not everybody’s favourite, have all been integral in shaping the history of American rock and roll music.
