Singapore - More than 300 researchers from Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines kicked off a stem cell symposium Monday, scrutinizing advances in research and stimulating further collaboration.
Eleven experts from major universities, institutes and hospitals in Britain and Singapore discussed topics from basic stem cell biology to clinical applications.
'Today's event is an important catalyst to stimulate further collaboration and progress in stem cell research,' said British High Commissioner Paul Madden. 'This is a key frontier in science with enormous potential for curing some of the most medically challenging diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and spiral cord injuries.'
A website was launched on the first day of the two-day symposium to act as a central repository for stem cell related news and activities both in the city-state and overseas.
The website will facilitate better communication among the stem cell research community and enable investigators and clinicians, both senior as well as junior, to 'collaborate more often and effectively as an outcome,' said Professor Alan Colman, executive director of the Singapore Stem Cell Consortium.
