Munich - The first signs of menopause - sleep disorders, irregular periods and mood swings - often appear in women in their early 40s, said Germany's professional association of gynaecologists in Munich.
Women in that age group also can have undesired testiness, but these menopausal-related problems do not necessarily require treatment.
However, women who are experiencing serious discomfort because of the symptoms should discuss the problems with their gynaecologist, said Klaus Koenig of the association.
Menopause begins around age 52 among women living in Germany, according to statistics. The start of the infertile years, marked by the end of the monthly period, comes in stages. As the hormonal level fluctuates drastically, women in the years leading up to menopause experience irregular periods.
'We recommend women who are in these years to exercise as much as possible,' said Koenig. Movement reduces the problems, helps to control weight and builds muscle. This can also help prevent osteoporosis.
A hormone test can determine whether a woman has entered that phase of her life.
