Jerusalem - Israel's first Muslim Arab minister successfully underwent surgery to repair a haemorrhage in his head Sunday night, Israeli media reported Monday morning.
Minister of Science, Sport and Culture Raleb Majadele, 54, was hospitalized Sunday, after complaining of feeling unwell at the end of the cabinet meeting.
He was examined by a paramedic at the Prime Minister's Office and was then taken to hospital. A small haemorrhage was found in the back of his head between his skull and brain, but doctors did not diagnose a stroke.
Majadele was treated in the neurological department of Jerusalem's Hadassh hospital, where former prime minister Ariel Sharon was treated after suffering two strokes.
Majadele, a resident of the Arab-Israeli town of Baka al-Gharbia near the West Bank, was confirmed as a minister on January 29 last year. A veteran labour activist, he first entered the Knesset in 2004 on behalf of the Labour Party.
