Istanbul - Seven alleged members of the Kurdish Iraqi Islamist group Ansar al-Islam were handed lengthy prison sentences by an Istanbul court late Friday for planning an attack on the June 2004 NATO summit in Istanbul attended by US President George W Bush.

The alleged group leader was sentenced to 12-and-a-half years, while the other six received sentences of six years and three months after being found guilty of belonging to a terrorist organisation.
Twelve other men were cleared of similar charges. They had also been arrested when security forces swooped in the western Turkish city of Bursa on those who were sentenced.
