Works for me, I think you need WMP9/10 installed. It wasn't working for me so I closed MSN7, installed WMP10 and restarted MSN. Played a song in iTunes and it works like a dream.

Cheers,

i cant see the song playing on my msn messenger 7.0.0777 . It never worked. I have the latest itunes and wmp versions. (wmp 10 and itunes 4.7). I tried uninstalling itunes and msn messenger and reinstalling them. didnt work. I have the wmp msn plugin enabled too but neither itunes or wmp doesnt show the song name on msn messenger. I am about to go crazy here! Anyone any ideas??

Im getting the same problem. It worked once in iTunes, lovely. Then when MSN restarted it stopped working, no settings were changed. Now Windows Media Player doesn't work either and multiple repairs/re-installs/removing of application data has not fixed this bug.

Yeah I have the exact same problem. It only worked twice for me. I initially thought it was my computer, but reading all you guys' comments have convinced me that Microsoft really screwed up this time! Buggy software?! That's soooo not like Microsoft's style!!;)

I have the identical problem, and i idntified this a while back on my personal blog. It has to do with sequencing of executing either MSN, WMP and their associated plug ins. I have tried to discern what the matter is, but essentially, i think it has to deal with API access by the exes. This was cool for the first 5 minutes, but when i shut down my computer and came back, no song title for me :(

FIX THIS MS.

I had been having the same problem... MSN starts when windows starts, itunes does not, seems as if you have to have itunes open before msn, (i just exited and restarted msn and it worked fine), Though still worthy of being fixed... see if that works for you.

The above comment mentioning the .exe sequences of MSN and iTunes, WMP was right on the money. I have made sure that the msn background does not start up. Go to start menu > Run > type msconfig > go to up > find msnmsgr and untick the box. Will then be prompted to restart. Then when your computer reboots the feature should be working. Anyway this worked for me hope it helps.
Cheers Tom

I've definetly had the same problem as everyone else, I have all the latest versions of iTunes and WMP but after prtty much the first day, the music identifier just stayed stuck on one song, even though that song was long done with. I did the restart and re-install and now it just flat out doesn't work.

i had exactly the same problem, just open itunes first, if msn is running close it down then open itunes then reopen msn and it should work after a few mins.

If you are finding trouble with the MSN plug in for WMP, or infact, iTunes, here is an advised course of action. I take no responsibility for any misfortune as a result of using this.

From MSDN:
Uninstall MSN Messenger
Opened Registry Editor
Deleted the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoft MSNMessenger
Reinstall.

In first case, this worked, but then didnt. So, this is the course i ended up doing:

As above,
In the options settings, set MSN messenger to open in the main window.
Then disable the MSN plug in in WMP,
Then re enable it, and it should work.
Do again, when required to display song name and title.

The msn-wmp-integration stopped working after a msn-crash... Switched to Winamp which actually worked. After seeing this thread I tried starting wmp and went into Tools -> Plug-ins and checked the 'MSN Messenger Music Plugin', which the previous crash obviously must have unchecked.

The solution is simple:
Go to WMP and, Tools > Plugins > MSN Messenger Music Plugin
That's it, It was turned off at my pc because WMP had a problem and then it said: Shuting off the plugin because of problems, so just turn it back on :P.

Found THE answer. It's weird but it WORKS; no un/re-install; no registry hack.

In MSN Messenger go to Tools / Options / General and check 'Open Messenger main window when Messenger starts.'

Fixes the problem permanently.

(This bug was driving me nuts -- I had NO problems with iTunes/Messenger working on one computer but I could never get it to work consistently on a second computer. This fixed the problem IMMEDIATELY).
