Apple stems US losses to Android
Jan 19, 2012, 9:51 GMT
San Francisco - Apple has managed to put a dent in Android's seemingly relentless march to domination of the smartphone market.
According to figures released Wednesday by tracking firm Nielsen, 44.5 per cent of consumers who purchased a smartphone in the last three months bought an iPhone. That's almost double the figure in the three prior months when many would-be customers waited until the October launch of the iPhone 4s to get a new smartphone.
Android's sales represented 46.9 per cent of all smartphones while the big loser in the quarter was RIM, whose BlackBerry devices dropped from 7.7 per cent to 4.5 per cent.
The report said that Android still dominated the smartphone market with 46.3 per cent of all smartphone users owning an Android device, versus 30 per cent with an Apple phone.
