Study: Smartphones sap camera sales
Dec 23, 2011, 20:31 GMT
San Francisco - The sweeping spread of smartphones has sparked a slump in the sale of point-and-shoot digital cameras, according to a new study by market research firm the NPD group.
The study, released Thursday, found that 2011 sales of point-and-shoot cameras dropped 17 per cent compared to 2010, as the percentage of photos taken with smartphones grew to 27 per cent from 17 per cent. Shipments of video cameras dropped by 13 per cent.
'There is no doubt that the smartphone is becoming 'good enough' much of the time,' said Liz Cutting, executive director and senior imaging analyst at NPD, in a statement. She said that smartphones were increasingly becoming the default device for capturing spontaneous moments, but 'for important events, single-purpose cameras or camcorders are still largely the device of choice.'
The spread of smartphones has not however impacted sales of more sophisticated cameras, with shipments of cameras with detachable lenses increasing 10 per cent over the year. High-end digital cameras with optical zooms greater than 10x saw a sales boost of 16 per cent.
