San Francisco - Viewers of YouTube logged more than 1 trillion playbacks on the online video site in 2011, Google announced Tuesday. The staggering figure amounts to 140 views for every person on the planet, Google said.
Google also released a list of the top-ten most viewed videos apart from those issued by major record labels. The list was mostly comprised of amateur content, or covers by comedy acts of hit songs. The one commercial that made it onto the list was Volkswagen's ad for its Passat, in which a child dressed up as Darth Vader is fooled into thinking he had used the Force to start the car, when really it's his Dad using the vehicle's remote control.
The top viewed video came from US teenage singer Rebecca Black, whose song Friday was a worldwide sensation, beating out the second place Ultimate Dog Tease, which features a whining mutt reacting to his owner's tales of food. A song by US comedy troupe Lonely Island, featuring Michael Bolton in a number called Jack Sparrow was third most popular, followed by a video in which two twin babies have a gibberish conversation with each other.
An animated video of a cat flying through space was fifth followed by Karmin Music's cover of the Chris Brown song Look at Me Now. Lonely Island's The Creep was seventh, followed by a cover of the Lady Gaga song Born This Way by 11-year-old Maria Aragon. Volkswagen's The Force was ninth, with a video of a mother cat hugging her kitten rounding out the top ten.
The most watched video from major labels was Jennifer Lopez' On the Floor, followed by LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem. Bruno Mars' The Lazy Song was third, with Nicki Minaj in fourth with Super Bass.
Pitbull's Give Me Everything and Rain Over Me were in fifth and sixth, with Jessie J's Price Tag in seventh, and LMFAO's Sexy and I Know it in eighth. Katy Perry closed out the top ten with ET and Last Friday Night.
