Google top search for 2011: Rebecca Black

Dec 16, 2011, 9:59 GMT

San Francisco - So much for the wisdom of the masses. Google revealed its top ten searches for the year Thursday and it was 13-year-old Rebecca Black who topped the Zeitgeist 2011 list. She's the singing sensation whose song Friday had 167 million YouTube hits despite being derided by almost everyone who watched it.

The list does not recognize the most searched-for terms, concentrating instead on the fastest rising terms around the globe.

The Google+ social networking platform placed second on the list followed by Ryann Dunn, the star of the stunt franchise Jackass, who died in a car crash.

Casey Anthony, the young US mother who was controversially acquitted of killing her child, was fourth, followed by video game Battlefield 3. Sixth spot went to the term iPhone 5, followed by singer Adele, and the Japanese utility Tepco, whose nuclear reactors were damaged in the March 2011 earthquake.

The top ten was rounded out by Steve Jobs and iPad 2, but Google also gave a special mention to planking, the new fad of laying down in strange places and photographing yourself.

You can read more about the list on the Zeitgeist site.
