Clinton warns against software sales to dictatorships
Dec 9, 2011, 11:55 GMT
The Hague - Technology companies that sell internet software to dictatorships should realize that their products could easily be used to violate human rights, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told a conference in the Netherlands Thursday.
Clinton made her comments at an internet freedom conference in The Hague. One of the event's sponsors was Google.
She highlighted Iran and Syria as possible software buyers that could misuse technology, but did not name any specific companies that had sold products to repressive regimes.
Clinton said much technology on today's market could be used to spy on people online or to limit their access to the internet. She called it a 'catastrophe' for the internet if some countries were to wall off web access.
The duty of companies was not to listen to assurances from countries and foreign companies, but to act responsibly, she said.
