Beginners can build computers too
Oct 23, 2011, 3:06 GMT
Berlin - There's nothing mysterious about putting a computer together. No special tools are necessary. In fact, a standard screwdriver is enough to get you most of the way there. But newbies to computer building should allow themselves plenty of time and be sure to read the instructions before starting such a project.
Along with a screwdriver, you will, of course, need the proper parts and cables, reports German computer magazine c't Ratgeber Hardware. It might also be a good idea to have a second, operating and internet-ready computer nearby, so you can quickly look up tips on specialty websites or forums if you run into a problem.
Installing the CPU fan is about the most complicated part of the task. It should definitely be built into the housing before the motherboard, otherwise the necessary fasteners will be hard to reach. And, of course, be sure everything is unplugged before you work on a computer.
Thanks to standardized parts, putting together a computer is fairly easy, say experts. But there are devils in the details, like when a motherboard and working memory are incompatible. Compatibility lists are available on most manufacturers' websites.
