Catch camera thieves using the internet
Jun 25, 2011, 22:01 GMT
Berlin - Losing a digital camera or having it stolen doesn't have to be the end of your photography hobby thanks to a new online search engine.
The website www.stolencamerafinder.com works with a little bit of luck and a JPG upload of a photo taken with the camera. The site analyses the photo's EXIF metadata for the camera's serial number and compares it with data from millions of other pictures online.
If there are other pictures with that number, the site lists the origin site and, possibly, other valuable information about either the thief or the camera's new 'owner.'
The search engine's notification function is especially practical. To keep people from having to search every day, it reports via email as soon as a match is found.
To make it work, upload a preferably unedited picture. Some editing programmes can change the EXIF data. If you don't want to upload a picture, just input the camera's serial number.
