Reports: Google to launch music service

San Francisco - Web search giant Google is planning to extend its empire to the musical arena and will launch a new music service next week, several technology sites reported Wednesday. The service will offer enhanced music search capabilities that will allow fans to access a wide range of content about a given artist, including streaming audio tracks in a single Google web page, Wired.com reported. The page will also include links to download songs, which will be offered from allied music retailers that are supported by all the major record labels, the report said. If the project is successful the plan could make a serious dent in the music monopoly enjoyed by Apple's iTunes. The initiative is yet another sign of Google's growing competition with Apple, as the two companies increasingly go head to head, most notably in Google's attempts to promote its Android operating system for mobile phones, which is widely regarded as the most credible challenger to Apple's iPhone.
