Gone in 31 seconds: Thieves clean out Apple store

New York - Apple's slogan for its new operating system is Better. Faster. Easier. But the phrase could also apply to a lightning-fast heist in which a gang of five thieves burst into an Apple store in New Jersey Wednesday and within 31 seconds got away with a stash of 23 Macbook Pros, 14 iPhones and nine iPod Touches. Security video of the robbery released Thursday shows the gang taking advantage of the open design of the street front store in Marlton, New Jersey some 140 kilometres south-east of New York. Using nothing more sophisticated than a brick the thieves smashed the plate glass window with a single blow. One of them signaled to the guard that they had a gun, while the others fanned out along the aisles and loaded up on the valuable electronic goodies. They didn't even have to unplug anything since Apple's power cords are designed to detach instantly. Tech sites said the haul is worth between 40,000 and 100,000 dollars but noted that a company as supposedly smart as Apple should have seen the robbery coming. 'This is what happens when you leave fully operational, untethered laptops out on display overnight,'noted Tomshardware.com.
