Nobody should be realy surprised that free online games are becoming popular. They are 'free' after all. So a number like 3 million registered users means nothing. The bottom line for the company that produces and maintains any free game (in this case SOE for Free Realms) wants to know what the average registered user will end up spending plus how many of those 3 million will actually become members. That data will take time to collect and analyse and will in most cases not be made public.
Sony Online Entertainment in my opinion will have a very good chance to become profitable with this game in lets say two years. Free Realms is cleverly made and promises to add new and enticing content frequently - the number one ingredient to keep registered users coming back and eventually pay for something.
