Whether in light of the building success of Amazon’s Kindle or not, Sony has released the second in their range of electronic book readers. Set to go on sale in the US in November, the PRS-700 will cost US$400, a full hundred dollars more than the PRS-505 model sold by Sony that will remain on sale.

With a similar 6-inch electronic paper display similar to the one used in the PRS-505, Sony have added a touch panel to the screen, as well as a reading light. The touch panel will allow users the opportunity to scroll through their book, as well as search using an on-screen keyboard. Users will also be able to highlight passages with an additional stylus.
The PRS-700 will be able to store approximately 350 e-books in its built in memory, as well as using Memory Stick of SD Card functionality to boost storage. It will be compatible with Sony’s Broadband Electronic Book format, as well as Microsoft Word documents, Adobe PDF and the International Digital Publishing Forum's XML-based EPUB format. According to Sony – but not yet independently verified – the new model will feature battery life supporting up to 7,500 pages of continuous reading.
As for its dimensions, Sony hasn’t released anything specific, but has described it as being about the size of a “slimmed-down paperback book” and weighing in at “about 10 ounces”, or 280 grams for the rest of the world.
