Report: Apple weighing unlimited music move

San Francisco - Apple is negotiating with major record companies over an unlimited music access option for its iPod and iPhone customers in return for a percentage of the devices' purchase price, The Financial Times reported Wednesday. The plan covers music only and would offer customers the opportunity to either pay a one-time lifetime access price to the iTunes' music library, or a monthly subscription fee, according to the report. The report said that Apple is offering 20 dollars from every iPhone and iPod sold to music companies as compensation. By comparison, a similar deal announced in December by Nokia gives 80 dollars from every device to the music companies. The lifetime access fee would cost customers 100 dollars and would last for the lifetime of their iPhone or iPod, while a monthly subscription would cost 7 to 8 dollars the report said.
