While the initial reception and resulting feedback relating to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) Web browser may have failed to stoke the fires of either users or critics, the Redmond-based software giant is now keen to make amends with its upcoming IE8 browser. With the company recently revealing that IE8 will move into its beta test stage during the first half of 2008, the new Web browser has now passed the Acid2 test to ensure that it will not run the risk of "breaking" the Internet when the official version finally arrives at market, reports Earth Times."Acid2 is one test of how modern browsers work with some specific features across several different Web standards," outlined Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of the Internet Explorer Team at Microsoft. "With respect to standards and interoperability, our goal in developing Internet Explorer 8 is to support the right set of standards with excellent implementations and do so without breaking the existing Web."While the October 2007 release of its predecessor marked a rush of complaints related to the Cascading Style Sheers (CSS) feature, Internet Explorer 8 has been green flagged through the Acid2 test as being compatible with existing standards including CSS and RSS (or Really Simple Syndication)."Standards are a (critical) means to this end, and we focus on the standards that will help actual, real-world interoperability the most," added Hachamovitch regarding Microsoft’s shift of focus towards interoperability, which has come about due to the popular placement of new rival browsers such as those on offer from the likes of Apple (Safari) and Mozilla (Firefox).A final and official release date for Internet Explorer 8 has yet to be confirmed by Microsoft Corporation. Internet Explorer comes bundled for free with the Windows operation system and, as a result, is the most widely used Web browser in the world.Small browser specialist Opera is currently in the process of suing Microsoft on the grounds that bundling IE with Windows is creating an unfair monopoly in the market while choking out competition.
