Nokia targets laptops with new N810 Internet Tablet

Mobile phone giant Nokia Corporation has this week whipped the covers of expectation from its latest piece of consumer technology, the N810 Internet Tablet, which it is positioning as an attractive Nseries alternative to the more sizeable modern day laptop computer. Credit: Nokia.According to Nokia Corp., the new "pocketable" N810 Internet Tablet provides the functionality of a traditional piece of computer hardware but is packed into a sleek and stylish all-in-one portable device. The N810 comes equipped with a slide-out keyboard, digital audio/video playback and also Wi-Fi capability for VoIP calling. It also offers up a "premier" portable Internet experience via its large colour display screen, touchpad screen, 400MHz processor, Mozilla-based Web browser, and up to 10GB of memory (which comes as 2GB of internal memory with an optional 8GB memory card combined)."More than ever, people want to bring their online communities with them wherever they go – whether it’s on vacation, a business trip, or just around their neighborhood – and the pocketable Nokia N810 Internet Tablet lets consumers do just this," trumpeted Bill Plummer, VP of multimedia at Nokia North America.Nokia also points out that the N810 is "perfect for the person on the go" thanks to it delivering up to 45 hours of music playback for as many as 7,500 tracks, and also GPS technology that comes complete with free preloaded maps. The included Maps application will support the (subscription-based) Wayfinder service while also enabling users to search for street names and addresses, locate specific points of interest (POI), and find nearby Wi-Fi hotspot access points.The Nokia N810 hosts the maemo Linux-based OS2008 system, which offers a customisation-friendly user interface and also comes with a Mozilla-based browser with Ajax and Adobe Flash 9, as well as Bluetooth headset support and enhanced video and audio features. Finland-based Nokia Corp. has today announced that it has begun shipping the new N810 Internet Tablet across the United States and that it will be available via the likes of Best Buy Mobile retailers, CompUSA, Micro Center, and Nokia’s Flagship stores in both New York and Chicago. It will also retail online through Amazon, Buy, CircuitCity, Nseries, and PCMall. The manufacturer’s recommended price for the N810 Internet Tablet is $479 USD.
