NBC, Viacom, and various other major media companies are presently seeking out copyright protection technology as a collaborative alternative to YouTube’s recently released proprietary "fingerprint" system. And this week NBC Universal has announced that it is pulling all of its YouTube clips prior to the official launch of its own Hulu video content service. Credit: NBCBeyond removing its video clip content from the Google-owned video-sharing Web site, NBC Universal is also closing its promotional channel, which is hosted on YouTube. In light of recent industry attitudes directed towards YouTube regarding its long-delayed action against the illegal posting of copyrighted material on its pages, NBC has been keen to point out that this week’s move is only based on boosting the exposure of Hulu and does not represent a harder line with YouTube."Down the road, we will be open to promoting our content as we see fit," commented an NBC spokesperson via a Financial Times report, before adding that NBC was "not closing the door on anything."The feeling of mutual respect – and the distinct lack of burning bridges – has also been offered up by YouTube, which said that it was informed of NBC’s plans regarding Hulu late last week and that the relationship enjoyed by both parties has certainly been a successful one up to this point in time. A YouTube spokesperson outlined that: "we hope NBC decides to post more original content and stay engaged with our users."From NBC’s standpoint, the new Hulu.com service, which is a joint venture between NBC Universal and News Corp., will allow for the posting of NBC video content on a platform that legally showcases professional material and grants audiences access without fear of copyright infringement.As NBC’s partner in the Hulu service, News Corp. does not have a dedicated promotional channel on YouTube but the media giant has intimated that it will be adopting a more ‘pro-active’ attitude towards the removal of its illegally posted content on YouTube’s service. Similar to NBC Universal, News Corp. has also removed video content from its own Fox On Demand service on social networking site MySpace in order to increase awareness for the launch of Hulu.
