As mainstream computer manufacturers continue to jostle for positioning in the enthusiast gaming market with the likes of exclusive companies such as Alienware and VoodooPC, they are also utilising the skills integral to those device makers to bolster products in their core lines. Credit: DELL.Specifically, while Dell-owned Alienware pushes out hugely muscled multimedia and gaming desktops and notebooks, Dell itself is this week whipping the covers off its new XPS M1730 notebook, which is has also been labelled as "the beast" and aimed towards gamers wanting to experience the "peak of mobile gaming performance."Arriving as the world’s first notebook to incorporate AGEIA PhysX Mobile Technology and also Logitech’s GamePanel LCD display, the M1730 should cover all the bases for gamers looking to take their action on-the-move. According to Dell, the Physx processor delivers "realistic movement and environmental interaction as incredible speeds without degrading overall performance." And, from the point of view of the GamePanel LCD, gamers will be able to view stats, create new macros, and track important system info – all while remaining in-game.Sporting an upper-tier and over-clocked Intel Core 2 Extreme X7900 processor (up to an optional 3.2GHz) and armed with NVIDIA SLI technology, Dell trumpets that the M1730 is the only available notebook featuring the AGEIA PhysX 100M processor. Also, for a strictly limited time, the notebook will come packaged with Ubisoft’s award-winning Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2. In order to keep "the beast" competitive in an environment where evolution quickly leaves hardware defunct, Dell is also offering a special graphics upgrade program so that users can remain in touch when next-generation graphics processor technology swings into view. As standard the M1730 offers the 256MB dual NVIDIA GeForce Go 8700M GT.The M1730 also comes equipped with a backlit keyboard and separate 10-key number pad, a 17-inch UltraSharp screen with a response time of just 7 milliseconds, support for Dell’s LightFX application, and a 200GB hard drive. Online gamers are thoroughly catered for, with the M1730 offering optional built-in mobile broadband connectivity with a selection of carriers and Wi-Fi technology choices. It also offers up an onboard Web camera and digital array microphone for gamers looking to compete and chat much more socially."Dell is committed to the creation of PCs that will take hard-core gamers to new frontiers," said Glen Robson, head of Dell’s XPS systems. "The XPS M1730 engineering team worked with developers on leading titles such as The Orange Box from Valve’s Half Life 2 and 2K Games’ BioShock to help ensure this notebook can deliver the full-throttle power required for the most anticipated PC games."The XPS M1730 is available now with a starting price of $2,999 USD
