New TV show 'Quarterlife' to be an online-exclusive

The power of the Internet and the draw of its growing user demographic continues to pull in the attentions of media creators this week with news that Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz are to forego the traditional TV route to bring the launch of their new show Quarterlife exclusively to the MySpace social network.Zwick and Herskovitz have worked together on many television and feature film productions throughout the years, including Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle "Blood Diamond", teen-angst drama "My So-Called Life", and popular 80’s drama "thirtysomething".However, starting on November 11 of this year, the production duo will officially launch their new ‘twentysomething-style’ creation onto News Corp.’s hugely popular MySpace network. Furthering the show’s exposure, it will also appear on Zwick and Herskovitz’s own social networking support portal quarterlife.com.Although various other forms of Web-based programming have been produced for the online masses due to the platform’s phenomenal rate of growth, Quarterlife’s creators are keen to stress that this particular show boasts "network quality" through a large-scale production that would normally be befitting of regular television."We’d been thinking for years how to use the Internet to create and distribute our own products," explained Herskovitz in a USA Today article. "We suddenly realized this was the perfect thing. We’ve got creative control. We’re left alone to do it the way we want. It’s also the perfect jumping-off point for a stand-alone, social-networking destination site."Quarterlife will air online twice per week across 36 eight-minute episodes that are likely to strike a chord with most avid Net users as they follow the life of a young journalist (played by newcomer Bitsie Tulloch) and the ongoing development of her rather sensational video blog.Initially aired by ABC as a one-hour pilot – which saw the show later scrapped for conventional TV – the new myspacetv.com distribution deal will give Zwick and Herskovitz access to some 110 million active viewers throughout 20 different international countries. Aimed specifically at the tech-savvy, social network-loving demographic, Quarterlife could well inspire plenty of chatter to fill the forums provided by its accompanying Web 2.0 quarterlife.com platform, where users will also be able to submit their own videos, storylines, and script ideas to potentially guide the evolution of the show.
