Nintendo Wii breaks UK sales record

The winning innovation and cross-demographic appeal of Nintendo’s motion-sensing Wii videogame console would appear to be showing absolutely no signs of weakening across retail outlets some nine months after the console’s official release in the US and UK. More pointedly, independent media sales monitoring specialist Chart Track has this week revealed that Japanese gaming giant Nintendo has successfully introduced more than a million UK homes to the Wii phenomenon. By passing the 1 million unit sales yardstick in a total time of 38 weeks, the diminutive Nintendo Wii has duly reserved its place in the cavernous annuls of gaming history as the fastest selling home console to ever enter the UK market.Interestingly, it is also worth noting that Nintendo’s latest home console, which allows for unprecedented gaming immersion through the application of its wireless motion-sensing Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers, reached the prestigious 1 million mark a full 11 weeks quicker than Sony’s hugely popular PlayStation 2, and 22 weeks quicker than Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox 360. Allied with the market-leading Nintendo DS touch-screen handheld videogame system, Nintendo’s surging hardware appeal certainly looks to be formidable. And that dominance translates directly to recent UK console shares for both the Wii and DS that show the consoles attributed with a respective 69 and 86 percent of the home-based and handheld markets."The non-stop demand for Wii, even in the traditionally slow sales periods for video games in the UK, is clearly behind this record breaking achievement," trumpeted David Yarnton, GM of Nintendo UK. "The performance of both systems appears to indicate that unprecedented interactive entertainment experiences, provided by a combination of the revolutionary nature of DS and Wii with the increasing number of unique software titles for the system from Nintendo and third parties, are being enjoyed by both avid and new gamers of all ages."Yarnton also pointed out that with other great games including "Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 [Corruption] and Endless Ocean" all due to arrive on the Wii in the UK before the close of 2007, Nintendo’s hardware and software will continue to be the industry’s "main driving forces."Other software titles of note scheduled to arrive in the UK during Q4 2007 include The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on the DS and Super Paper Mario on the Wii.
