Microsoft: Vista SP1 will arrive in early 2008

The service pack (SP1) speculation seems to have been rolling around the Internet ever since the official January 31 release of Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system. Not quite putting pay to the rumours, the American software behemoth has this week (almost) offered confirmation on its much talked about arrival.According to a report published by the Reuters news agency, Microsoft has said that its Vista SP1 release, which will mark the very first major update for the OS, is scheduled to appear early in 2008. It is expected to arrive with complete with a range of improvements, fixes and other required updates. Notably, from a business standpoint, the adoption rate of Vista is likely to be bolstered somewhat by the first service pack based on Microsoft’s more prominent corporate customers generally waiting for initial pre-load problems and glitches to be addressed and solved before then moving to embrace any new operating system.Regarding the unveiling of SP1, Microsoft has offered via its official Web site that a select number of Windows Vista users will be testing the service pack within a month, while the final version should be ready for shipping to computer companies during Q1 of next year. However, when it comes to expected impact, the Redmond-based company also took the opportunity to outline that Vista’s SP1 is unlikely to be as significant as those seen with previous operating systems and will not provide aesthetic changes or introduce major new features. The company cited the ongoing benefit of periodic online live updates as the reason, though users should still expect to see Vista improvements implemented in terms of security, performance, and overall reliability. In related news, Microsoft has also announced that SP3 for Windows XP operating systems will hit its official release in the coming weeks, and that the manufacturer release of Windows Server 2008 has been delayed until Q1 of 2008.

WOW! A service pack for 'Vista' already? Not even the Edsel (which Vista so closely resembles) had need for a service pack so soon!
