$599 USD PlayStation 3 price return now imminent

By Stevie Smith Aug 30, 2007, 14:19 GMT

The temporary $100 USD price drop presently being enjoyed by prospective consumers interested in investing in Sony’s next-generation videogames console looks set to come to an end. Specifically, Sony has revealed that all remaining stock of its $499 USD 60GB PlayStation 3 are now with retail outlets and that the new $599 USD 80GB model is waiting in the wings to take its place.

"We no longer have any inventory in SCEA warehouses. All inventory has been purchased and shipped to retailers," commented Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) spokesman David Karraker on availability of the existing 60GB model. "We don't have visibility as to if that is on their store shelves or in their warehouses at this time. However, based on inventory reports from our retailers, there is ample supply still left in the channel."

Karraker’s offered "ample supply" is, of course, some way beyond vague in outlining exactly when consumers will be once again staring at an ominous price tag of $599 USD for the same games machine merely bundled with an extra 20GB of storage space.

And scant little more elaboration on the subject has been forthcoming from Sony, reports PC World, suffice it to say that it "won’t be making any further announcement regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluate."

However, despite receiving criticism for boldly lauding its initial $100 USD price drop prior to this year’s E3 Summit in Santa Monica – only to then announce it as a strictly temporary 60GB stock-clearing exercise – some industry analysts are predicting that the $599 USD 80GB model will also be subject to the $499 USD reduction soon after its launch.

If it was 400 bucks I would have bought one by now. It's just too damned expensive for a game console.

The Wii seems to be more fun and is more down to earth in pricing. Get it through your heads, Sony. $$$ != Fun.

Dude, you seem to forget. this is not JUST a gaming unit but also a blu-ray player. you are paying for both. the wii is a different system completely and will not be able to offer what the ps3 or the xbox 360 offer.

Ironically, the Wii faces a lot of the same issues as the PS3. Few games, little online gaming support, etc. The 360 is the system that has the support of developers for games and online play.

Keep in mind, I say that as a proud PS3 owner!

Sony makes the best $600 paper weights. I hear they even can play video games, but I primarily use mine as a paper weight. I highly recommend the PS3 model. That paper hasn't moved an inch.

Uh...lest we forget the PS3 is more than a game console, it can be considered a computer hardrive.

Sony gotta made up their mind, decisive and final. Stop with all these PR crap. Let consumer know your intention straight. First and foremost, PS3 is a gaming machine. I could care less about BLU-RAY b/c BLURAY player will be very cheap soon from CHINA.

I wish people would stop trying to sell the “but it’s a Blue-Ray player” argument. I don’t want a Blue-Ray player, never did. Judging by the sales figures not many people are buying it either. NO console is worth more than $300. If I were to spend that kind of cash on gaming I would drop it in my PC. I glad Sony is doing so poorly because the next generation gaming machines should be more reasonably priced.

I understand that PS3 is expensive cuz of its BluRay player but who cares? Is there a plan in place to make it a hybrid player that is capable of reading both BluRay and HD-DVD? BTW, it's just a player. I'd prefer to buy a writer instead even though it'll take us another two year or so for it to be affordable. For now, I'm fine with using DVD and huge harddrives as both are inexpensive.

When the BluRay/HD-DVD player comes down in price, will the price of PS3 come down as well? SI

This time around (next gen gaming) everyone who buys a xbox 360 or a playstation 3 are getting taken advantage of. The 360 is expensive and they rip you off for more memory not to mention the accesories are high in price. The Playstation is more expensive because Sony wants to sell and over priced HD player that nobody cares about.

Well duh! The gaming industry learnt long ago that the money is made on software and accessories. They practically GIVE the consoles away!

Dont care about blue ray never did...I care about games and you have to offer at least one(NEW)good one a month(every two weeks even better). I dont think the PS3 is gonna put out games any where close to this. I ripped through Bioshock in a week (great game but its done now) and now Im in Two Worlds (two weeks to a month to rip this) I cant sit and play a game for 3 months...Yes Im a 360 owner but please understand that the whole PS3 vs 360 thing is just PR...Reality is PC vs the PS3 as most major 360 releases are PC/360. Thats well over a hundred million PC/360s vs less than 5 million PS3s..The game releases will reflect the numbers above 10 to 1. Im dont hate the PS3 but business is business. Imagine if Sony puts out a few stinkers in a row...6 months of nothing (it can happen)...My advice buy a 360 for now and pick up a PS3 when they launch the Xbox 720..That is the sweet spot (if your thinking straight) Anyway best of luck with your weekly trip to the video store (your gonna need it)

well I use my PS3 for viewing BD,some older DVD's
(it does a superb job up-scaling to 1080i), and
ocassionally I'll check my email on it.
I don't own a single game, not interested.

wish Sony would just cut-off the game crap and make it
exclusively a BluRayStation, and lower the price accordingly.
