Department of Defense Web site haemorrhaging sensitive information

Despite US Army concerns surrounding potential information leaks from the individual personal blogs of their troops, a series of audits carried out by the Army Web Risk Assessment Cell (AWRAC) have uncovered that the greatest source of leakage is coming from the official Web sites of the Department of Defense.The AWRAC audits, which were published by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, revealed that between the calendar year of January 2006 to January 2007, some 3,900 official military Web sites were found to be in violation of the operation security policy (OPSEC), while only a mere 30 violations were exposed across personal troop blogs.Specifically, the AWRAC findings showed that a mere three OPSEC violations were found in personal blogs between the period of June through to August of 2006, while not one was found across 209,000 blogs in September. Comparatively, official Army Web sites revealed some 571 violations throughout that same four-month span.Those opposing the Army’s continuing push to officially pre-approve and potentially censor each and every personal blog post made by enlisted personnel will likely jump on the AWRAC’s findings, especially in light of official Army sites that are apparently bleeding information to a much more worrying degree. In a related Wired News report, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) attorney Marcia Hofmann has offered that: "official Army web sites are the real security problem, not [personal military] blogs." She also outlined that troops with personal blogs, as long as they are "careful about what they post – as the vast majority are," exist as an asset to the US military and not a potential source of careless information transfer.
