Your headline os somewhat mis-leading , the fact that target has chosen to sell sony exclusivly thru christmass is neither nor there , HD has so much going for it that a lack of avail at target stores is no consequence , after all target is nt where techies get their stuff anyways , at least in my hood , look sony has been doing a lot of promos and after almost 2 years with all their might they are still trying , this is mostly due to the fact that HD has indeed a cult following that is much more sophisticated than sony could ever handle .
This statement has proven to be false. Target is not ending its support of HD-DVD.
HD-DVD is still the cheapest that would be why it's selling more in Europe but in every battle Sony has faced like this since losing the beta max vs vhs war (beta max was the better format but it was only supported by sony) they have proved to come out on top remember the walkman? or the playstation 2? which is still outselling every other console out ther with exception of the wii and remember there are an extra couple of million blu ray players out there in their new playstation 3's that don't get counted as dvd players because there in game consoles. yes the format war is not anywhere near it's conclusion but Sony knows what it is doing. and Target must think so or it wouldn't give up revenue by dropping HD-DVD even just for the holidays.
Look, the handwriting is obviously on the wall. Why on earth would Target not carry a product that has any REAL consumer appeal? The same thing can be said about Blockbuster. Businesses are in business to make money. The best way to make money is to sell products consumers want. They're not going to disadvantage themselves by failing to meet consumer needs. Therefore, Target's electronics buyers have obviously analyzed their own sales and that of the industry as a whole and determined that Blu-ray is the product most consumers will demand. If they're wrong, they'll be punished and heads will roll. That's why it's very unlikely that their wrong.
Im pretty sur Target is gonna hurt from this decision. The only reason they have decided to do this is because of the dropping inprice of Blu-Ray players, and theres supposed high-end status over HD-DVD. Like the gentlemen above said, nobody goes to Target to buy electronics, people got to target to buy underwear, and work clothes. If this article had been about Wal-Mart, then this would have been a nice donkey kick to the gut for HD-DVD. Theres nothing to say that Target knows what there doing, business is about stepping out and doing something differnt and new, and it looks like Target might want to put there foot back inside.
well, a few things to add here that were not mentioned in the article - first is that Sony is paying a substantial fee to have their products getting exclusive display space so this decision comes down to a company accepting some moo-lah to hand out shelf space NOT necessarily Target as a whole deeming Blu-Ray the winner. It's a smart business move by Sony but nothing else. It just proves Toshiba with the backing of Microsoft needs to come up with some announcements of their own fairly quick to get this bad buzz under control. The hints that Wal-Mart may back HD-DVD predominantly would be just the ticket. Also, Target will continue to sell HD-DVD software in the stores as well as the HD-DVD add on for the 360 (which is selling fairly well for them...) along with selling the Toshiba A2 HD-DVD player for $299 on it's website - so not quite the gloom and doom scenario that this article suggests...
Sony bought a endcap at Target just like Toshiba did at CC and BB, thats all, sorry its a non-event
