Nintendo leading in US software performance

Sales figures attributed to the performance of the major hardware players in the videogame arena have been stacked heavily in favour of Nintendo and its innovative DS and Wii consoles ever since they launched in November of 2004 and 2006 respectively. While the clamshell Nintendo DS remains a hot-selling product well over two years after its retail release, the Wii – the little underpowered box that could – is continually outstripping its vastly superior competition in all global regions. However, more importantly, Nintendo’s combined hardware dominance now looks to be translating itself into prominent positioning in the software market too.According to a New York Times report, the latest batch of videogame sales figures published by NPD Group reveal that Nintendo’s retail dominance is also leaving its mark on North American software charts. Indeed, of the top 10 selling videogames amassed throughout the first six months of 2007, six of them are attributed to Nintendo – four of them appearing on Wii and three on the DS handheld.Specifically, Pokemon Diamond on the Nintendo DS emerges as the best-selling title of 2007 so far, closely followed by the motion-sensing fun of Wii Play, and Pokemon Pearl, which sit in second and third place. Mario Party 8, Diddy Kong Racing, and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess sit behind in seventh, ninth, and tenth positions. On a monthly basis, Nintendo also displayed its emergent software dominance throughout June, with Mario Party 8 listed at number one with 426,000 sales, Wii Play placed in second with 293,000 sales, Pokemon Battle Revolution sitting in third with 288,400 sales, and Pokemon Pearl holding fourth spot with 214,700 unit sales. Other Nintendo titles in June’s top 10 include Pokemon Battle Revolution and Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition.Continuing its monthly trend of kicking about its next-generation competition in the hardware department, Nintendo also racked up an impressive 382,000 Wii sales throughout June, while Microsoft and Sony could only hit figures of 198,000 and 99,000 respectively with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.In an effort to bolster its sluggish sales performance, Sony has reduced the price of its 60GB PlayStation 3 console from $599 to $499 – though the price cut will only last as long as available stocks seeing as the 60GB model is no longer in production and will be phased out across the US from August in favour of the $599 80GB version. By comparison, the Nintendo Wii retails for a mere $249 USD.
