iPhoneDevCamp spawns wealth of creative applications

"Making the web a better place for iPhone" was the ethos of the recently held iPhoneDevCamp in Silicon Valley, which saw some 350 enthusiastic Web designers, software developers and testers gather together in a collaborative iPhone applications workshop.Held at Adobe Systems in San Francisco and inspired by BarCamp, SuperHappyDevHouse, and MacHack, attendees at the iPhone-specific tech event were able to create new Web applications, optimise existing Web apps, migrate Dashboard Widgets to Web-based widgets, and also test and optimise Web sites for the iPhone.During the course of the three-day event, around 60 brand new Web-based iPhone applications were created thanks to the gathered skill and imagination on show, reports the Times of India. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the intuitive nature of Apple’s iconic smartphone, many of the emerging ideas were crafted around casual games.Further to the likes of Tetris and Sudoku-inspired offerings, the throngs of enthusiasts and developers also focused in on the iPhone’s unique onboard features, including its positional sensor and, of course, its large tactile touch-screen. One particular creation called ‘Tilt’ saw players tasked with physically turning and rotating the handset in order to position an on-screen animal intent on consuming animated butterflies and falling leaves.Another original concept called ‘Pool’ saw the iPhone’s screen taking on the form of a lake that reacts to finger touches through subtle ripples across the water. Also, if another iPhone owner using Pool via the application’s community should sign in and touch the exact same spot as someone else, then a fish is promptly plucked from the lake.
Sadly, the developers were not given access by Apple to the iPhone’s hybrid Web-browsing device, so the collective talent instead focused its creative juices on Apple’s Safari Web browser instead. The final results of course mean that most of the applications emerging from iPhoneDevCamp are able to run on conventional Safari desktop browsers as well as being optimised for the iPhone.
iPhone owners not lucky enough to get to the iPhoneDevCamp in San Francisco can look forward to other similar events in the near future, with an iPhoneDevCamp set to take place in Dallas from August 24 to August 26.Those looking to peruse the fruits of developmental labour from the San Francisco event can visit Appleopolis.com, which provides an extensive iPhone application directory.

Other future camps are expected to take place in Shanghai and London, although no concrete dates have yet been set.

These are just more reasons not to get an iPhone. I get my music wirelessly on my smartphone already, and I don't see anything else I don't already get on the iPhone. I'll stick with what I've got.
