Anyone who defends the economics of our healthcare system is clearly tied to the benefits of those economics. Our system is wrought with abuse, misuse, overuse and political motivations that having nothing to do with delivering any benefit to the patient. Michael Moore is right on with his movie. Too bad it only scratches the surface of the problem.

i see the deaths of the american troops
have surpassed the 9-11 deaths.
good work george.
BK,
I'm with you to a point. One of my biggest worries when I first heard about this film was that, while the topic is timely and the message of universal health care needs to be delivered to non-believers, Michael Moore's history of taking liberty with factual information doesn't make him the ideal messenger to deliver that message. One of the most blatant examples of that in SICKO is the visit to the Cuban hospital. Michael Moore didn't mention that this hospital can only be used by:
1) members of the Cuban Communist Party.
2) members of the Cuban military.
3) tourists.
... nor did he mention that universal health care for the REST of the Cuban population is threadbare at best ... using therapies and equipment that, in the US, were considered obsolete years ago. Still, I suppose that's better than no care at all.
However, your comment may be spot on. Turner has been asked if she has any financial interest in the current health care industry (ie., as a stockholder) and she has refused to answer that question.
BTW, I was a claims analyst (adjuster) for two Blue Cross Blue Shield carriers - one in Oregon, one in Washington - for eight years. And, in my opinion, Turner's assertion that Moore focused on isolated and emotional incidents shows that she is incredibly naive. Abuse of patients and their right to care permeates the whole private system with barriers of deductibles, copays, contract exclusions, and waiting periods that leave some people with a choice between food on the table or being healthy enough to sit at the table. And her assertion that private companies really CARE about patient health is disputed by those very same deductibles, copays, contract exclusions, and waiting periods. If they REALLY cared, why not remove those financial barriers to health care?
We are the only industrialized country on Earth that has profit-driven private health care, not care-driven public health care. As such, we are considered a laughstock among the other industrialized countries.
Michael Moore has no idea what he is talking about. Having grown up in a socialist country and working for a large pharmaceutical company I can said without question the US system is far better then the socialist alternative. The only caviet to that is if you do not work you will not have health care.
The best solution to the health care issue would be to combine aspects of socialized medicine with private. If you tilt too far to the socialized system, you will stymie innovation. Heath care companies exist for two reasons;
1) provide medicines to those in need.
2) make money.
If the later is impossible, there is no force driving R&D.
Those in favor of socialized medicine I would warn you to be careful for what you wish for.

'Matt are you old enough to enlist in the Iraq War. I will give you a bonus if you join. Just tell me where to mail the check to. Let's see if you are really are a Man of conviction's.'
Wow i am not this Matt person your talking about... But im 14 and i would enlist in the army. But when im getting shot at i would think of the people who really care that im saving thier ass oh but the worst thing a soldier deals with is defending a selfish prick like you, one that never shuts his mouth.
the movie makes sense. I myself who only has a student insurance was advised by the doctor to go to the emergency room to get help. I was supposed to get an intravenous injection for a bacterial infection. I waited 9 hours in the emergency room without being seen to by a doctor. Then an aide looked at me and placed me in a medical ward for 5 minutes then booted me out because they need space. Later they just gave me a tetanus shot instead of the medicine advised by my doctor. When all was said and done, in two weeks I received my bill. They charged me for $500 for the stinking tetanus shot.
We have the best health care system in the entire world. We are not perfect, but we are without question the best. You do not have to look very hard at nations who have socialized medicine to realize the truth.
That said, I think our health care system can do a lot more to PROMOTE good health istead of creating a reactive system. As it stands, we are geared towards handling situations as they arise, instead of being proactive.
It is laughable that dental care, for example is still considered cosmetic...even though the health care industry does not admit it. Dental health is part of total health, but it is widely ignored. Vision is another area not taken seriously. Again...vision is a luxury...and too much of that cost comes out of pocket, especially with the high premiums you pay for insurance. There is very little emphasis placed on fitness and nutirition. Again...health clubs and nutritionists are a luxury....to them you are being vain, instead of wanting to get healthy.
I truly feel that we are the greatest nation on earth, and I believe we have the best health care system...but I would like to see the health care industry embrace a plan to encourage our population to embrace a proactive approach to good health. As of right now, they profit from the results of poor habits...
I lived in Canada for 10 years and US for 15 years. The Canadian health care system is much better than the US system.

And quite frankly she sounds like a dipshit.
That should tell you something. If you think America's healthscare system is better than systems in other civilized countries, you're an idiot.
That's it! I'm gonna write a blog about this news article about her blog about his movie. Maybe it'll get some news attention. Then feel free to include that in your blog about that article about my blog about thier article about her blog about his movie. Right?
Why is that the least educated/intelligent/weak minded lean to the right, and those with a modicum of intellect/education tend to lean to the left? Matt and Josh at the beginning of the whole comment section here are wonderful examples of how a lack of intelligence and/or education will push your political alignment. Was it because your 'pa' was right wing?
Regardless, this has nothing to do with right or left. But it is funny how people tend to associate the 'not Michael Moore' point of view with the right wing. Let's face it, the corporations that rule medicine are corrupt. And since we can easily identify corruption through like parties, we associate the right wing with the corporate corruption. They do tend to share a lot of philosophies such as the lack of regard for human welfare, getting rich, staying rich, etc... I guess I can see why people associate the two.
However, the system has been garbage through right and left presidents. And from that we can see that right and left aren't important. They're all still jerks.
Bob,
'Let's face it, the corporations that rule medicine are corrupt.'
And you want the government to take over health care because the government is not corrupt? There seems to be a common incongruity among Michael Moore supporters. They criticize the government as being corrupt, and then proceed to endorse handing healthcare over to the government.
I agree that the government is corrupt. This is precisely why I don't want the government running every aspect of my life. The fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives is that liberals tend to have faith in the government's ability to take care of its citizens. Conservatives don't trust the government to run their lives, and would rather take their chances in the free market.
The free market system isn't perfect, but it takes advantage of the fact that people are greedy and self-centered and corrupt. Socialism and communism disregard these flaws of humanity, assuming that the government will be a benevolent and efficient ruler of its people.
...COME to America to get health care. They appear in N. Dakota, Washington state, New York, Michigan. Where have YOU been????
A dog can get a hip transplant in a week in Canada. A person waits three years!
This is the libnazi smoke and mirrors show. They claim to provide care but only take you to the door. After that, you feed into a system designed to make you die before the care is administered. You will sit and fight it for hours.
Golly, I can't wait!
bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla oink oink snort..
How are the bubble people doing?
Let me get an oink!! oink!!
HOOOOOORAH!!
nobody?
Bruno,
Neither government nor business has a lock on corruption. There's plenty of corruption to go around. But, consider this. You can vote out a bureaucrat that's screwing you but you can't vote out a corporate executive that's screwing you.
Hillary Clinton walks out on SiCKO screening…
Clinton was not pleased with SiCKO
During a screening of Michael Moore’s new movie SiCKO to the DNC, Hillary Clinton got out of her chair and left the theatre hall in protest of the way she is portrayed in the film.
The movie investigates America’s notorious healthcare system and presents several arguments against it’s existence. But the movie also lays some of the blame on complicit and corrupt politcians for taking bribes from HMO’s and drug manufacturer’s in return for passing laws in their favor. Amongst the politcians mentioned is New York Senator Hillary Clinton, who is accused of accepting contributions in return for abandoning her campaign for free healthcare.
When this segment aired at the screening, Senator Clinton walked out of the theatre.
Moore’s “SiCKO” is being hailed as a catalyst for change
But most controversial is claims that as Clinton left, she was overheard mentioning a “deal” with Michael Moore, presumably one that would have left out the segment from the film. One of those that overheard the conversation reported hearing talk of a budget contribution to Moore’s film by the Clinton campaign. It is suspected that Clinton herself payed off Moore to exclude this scene, an agreement he may have ignored.
When questioned about the incident, Clinton campaign representative Sarah Golding told the press:
“Senator Clinton loved the movie and thinks it should serve as a catalyst for change. However, it is unfortunate Mr. Moore decided to make this personal… especially considering the recent controversy surrounding contributions to his documentary’s budget.” When asked to elaborate, Ms. Golding continued by saying, “Or did he not mention that his movie was being funded indirectly by Al-Qaeda?”
If it is indeed true that Moore was funded by Al-Qaeda, than it is possible he could be arrested as a traitor. However, no evidence currently exists suggesting this accusation is true. But we’ll keep an eye out anyway.
