50 percent of UK cannot survive without e-mail

If there was ever any doubt regarding the near pathetic dependency that most of us display in association with the Internet and its everyday online functionality – especially when an annoying ISP hiccup abruptly takes it away – a report released this week duly reveals that life without the Internet is no seemingly no life at all.More pointedly, the report in question, which involves a survey conducted for software company Nasstar by UK-based ICM Research, shows that half of those polled between the ages of 25 and 34 felt they simply couldn’t manage day-to-day without access to their e-mail accounts. According to an official Press Association release, the report signified that the 25 to 34-year-old category were also singled out as pioneers in terms of utilising the advantages of virtual communication in remaining connected both professionally and personally.Interestingly, however, and perhaps contrary to expectations, some 41 percent of polled teenagers claimed to be dependent on their e-mail, whereas 44 percent of those polled between the ages of 35 and 44 outlined that easy e-mail access was an integral and essential component of their lives.In terms of the different sexes, the female demographic emerged as being the more e-mail dependent of the online species, with 41 percent revealing their affection for online mailing, while 38 percent of men polled admitted they’d be somewhat lost without it."The first wave was the mobile phone, and many of us would admit we rely on our mobile and can't remember how we ever survived without it. This poll shows that the next phase is the growth of mobile email," outlined Charles Black, CEO of Nasstar. "While teenagers are passionate about their mobile phones and texting in particular, the older generations are relying more and more on email because of its use in a business capacity."The study also highlighted feedback variations based on regional placement of those polled. Specifically, 43 percent of those located in the south-east of the United Kingdom expressed their need for quick and reliable e-mail access, whereas only 34 percent echoed such a need in Wales.
