Well finally a large scale distributor takes the torch. Nice Move Dell !! Now its back on the shoulders of the community to push that choice to other users. If sales prove out what the majority of those posts requested. Others will be forced to follow. When the choice is overwhelmingly Linux, other vendors (Microsoft)will be forced to take note too. Linux Rox. Hope to see it in homes all over America ASAP! Kudos to Dell.
I was one of the MANY who sent comments to Dell requesting (and some demanding) pre-installed Linux, or at least a Linux compatible notebook PC without paying the Microsoft tax by being forced to purchase a license of Windows I didn't want, wouldn't use, and couldn't sell.
Thank you Dell!
This is at least a few years overdue. I think Dell will do well by being the OEM to finaly break the Microsoft stranglehold that coerced them to install Windows on every single machine sold, to enforce the Microsoft monopoly. People are ready for Linux and the lack of integrated hardware support that resulted in inevitable problems with one or two devices was the biggest force keeping Linux off the mainstream desktops of people who just wanted email, web browsing and the occasional OpenOffice applications without the viruses and other malware of Windows.
Now if we just had an open source small business accounting package that read Quickbooks data, there could be a mass defection from Windows in the small business world.
I think this is a great move. As a technology officer for a school system I will recommend Dell with Linux OS for some of our future purchases. We need to expose the students to Open Source.
