Ankara - Turkey lifted its ban on the popular video website YouTube on Friday, two days after the site was blocked by order of an Istanbul court because of videos on the site that described Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish republic, as a homosexual.
Turk Telekom announced on Friday that it had been notified of a court decision to lift the ban and stopped blocking access to YouTube, the Anadolu news agency reported.
An Istanbul criminal court on Wednesday ordered the site be blocked until videos that insulted Ataturk were removed.
The ban was immediately condemned by human rights associations in Turkey.
The banning order came after a week in which Turkish newspapers had launched a campaign highlighting the anti-Turkish videos. YouTube responded by removing the offending videos.
