Beijing - The number of internet users in China shot up by 30 per cent in 2006 to 132 million, putting the Asian economic powerhouse second worldwide in terms of internet use after the United States.
Of the 132 million internet users, 52 million have a broadband connection, Xinhua news agency reported, quoting figures from the Internet Information Center.
The number of telephone users meanwhile grew by 11 percent to 830 million over the year, the information ministry said.
The internet in China is heavily censored. Hundreds of internet sites, including the BBC News website and sites of human rights organizations, are blocked by the state.
