Taiwan stages cyber-war game simulating attack from China

Taipei - Taiwan has held its first-ever cyber warfare drill to enhance its capability against possible cyber attacks from rival China, a state-run news agency said Friday. The drill, part of the island's annual major war game Hankuang No. 22, was held Wednesday and Thursday to intercept, block and counter a possible Chinese cyber attack of Taiwan's major computer network to paralyze the island's intranet operation, the Central News Agency quoted an unnamed defence source as saying. China, a rival of Taiwan since the two sides split at the end of a civil war in 1949, developed the concept of cyber troops in 1999 to invade the computer network of its enemies or to input false information to sabotage their automated combat command systems. The move raised concerns among Taiwan's military, which has sought to upgrade its information security to counter the Chinese threat, the agency said. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
