World Cup website more than doubles page views to 4.2 billion

Zurich - The World Cup website has more doubled the amount of hits compared to 2002, with a record 4.2 billion page views recorded during the last edition in Germany which ended on Sunday. FIFA said Thursday in a press release that the 2-million mark from the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea at www.fifaworldcup.com was reached at the halfway mark this time around en route to the new record at the June 9-July 9 event. FIFA said the video stream of match highlights was called up 125 million times and that 875,000 fans signed in for the fantasy football competition. Argentina may have lost to Germany in the quarter-finals but the World Cup users voted the South Americans to have scored the top three goals of the tournament. Maxi Rodriguez' spectacular game-winning volley against Mexico was voted Goal of the Tournament by the users.
