Another talk it up for vista, from what I've seen many won't bother and there is already proof of concept virus for vista so secure and virus proof I think not, as always promised the world and fail to get it. Also all but vista ultimate addition are crippled in some way-meaning the ultimate addition the only one to have and it's not going to be cheap. so the general option will be , stay with xp/windows 2000 or mac or linux unless you have deep pockets.
I'm not a tech person, I'm an older person who uses a computer a lot. I am so fed up with Microsoft's bad manners, indifference to the real needs of their customers, their whining ways when confronted with their bad behavior by competitors (or the EU, or Korea, or Mass, or standards organizations) that I wouldn't care if the new Windows came with a dozen red roses, a bottle of champaign, a handsome man in a tuxedo, and a red BMW convertable. I still wouldn't use it.
I have Windows 2k on one machine, I have to keep it for some programs, but my other machines are Ubuntu and there's no turning back for me. If I can do it, anyone can. I'm that person that everyone says can't use Linux because it is too hard to learn (you know what dimwits us old farts are). Well, I'm living proof that it isn't too hard, and 'Grandma' and 'Grandpa' really are up to the task (Thanks to the folks at Cannonical who made it all much easier for us).
Mr. Gates won't be happy to hear that, but it's the truth. I tell all my friends too. Most of them never heard of Linux, or Ubuntu before. They have now though. :o) Once that 'Freedom' cat is out of the bag, it can't ever be put back.
No matter how pretty Vista is, it's still a trap. No more 'lock-in' for me.

You can wait for Windows Vista for all this eye Candy, or you can get it today in a bloated version of Linux. What we really want is not more eye candy, but just to be able to run our programs. How many times does Microsoft expect people to buy the same program over again? After buy programs like Microsoft Office for several hundred dollars, just to buy it again and again with each new machine, eventually even the most die-hard Windows user realizes there are better alternatives available.
Although I would always rather use GNU/Linux,
People _will_ program for Vista. Then especially
the big corporate companies with managers that
doesn't know a thing about computer science will
force their employees to move to Vista. The PC
makers like Dell won't be any help either, they
will pre-install Vista on every PC coming out of
their assymbly plants.
... If only I had a spare $1bn to give to the FSF.
Then we could have GNU/Hurd* on every PC in the world!

Operating Systems are a commodity, like soap and water. I do not want my soap to look pretty--it should help me clean my hands. Same for water.
There are some tasks which are easier because of Windows, and many more which become feasible with a nice Unix box around the place, so be it. Unless I have found a solution this tweaked that only Vista would work, there is no need for having it bought, installed, configured, hardened (of course) and taught in all due detail to the operator-to-be.
As long as my Linux boxen do all that is thrown at them, and do it reasonably well, I would not even think of an _evaluation_ of any other products, be them free (as in beer) or costly or what. Good riddance for all beta testers of the YAFOS from MS: with Debian Etch and SUSE 10 firmly in place, running smoothly, manageable and secure, I am to be paid to hit on anything proprietary. For now I will steer clear of it, and enjoy spending my $$$ on my family, hobbies and comunity projects.
Hasta la Vista, baby.
Yours,
YBK
