Germany cracks down on E-Donkey file-sharers, searches homes

Cologne - German prosecutors said Tuesday they had led a nationwide swoop on file-sharers in the E-Donkey network who are suspected of illegally trading in copyrighted films and music. The Cologne prosecutions office said the raids on 130 homes and offices were Germany's biggest crackdown ever on file-sharers, who are accused of depriving media companies of royalties. E-Donkey is one of the main worldwide file-sharing services that has come under attack by the music industry with multi-million-dollar damages claims in the United States and complaints to prosecutors in other jurisdictions. The German swoop had identified 3,500 persons who were offering large numbers of files, in some cases 8,000, for download, the prosecutors said. A formal criminal inquiry against all of them had been opened. E-Donkey is software that can run on thousands of computers to create a virtual library of available music and films.
