I'm typing this on a MacBook (early 2008 Penryn). Swapping the hard drive is a simple procedure that even a non-techie can accomplish in 5 minutes. Blanket statements about the limitations of Macs vs Windows PCs need to be re-considered and fact based.
It's FAR easier to replace just about anything in a Mac than a PC, Apple doesn't the 'entire design' they don't skimp on the internals... so if it looks great on the outside, you can be sure it works great on the inside.
Apple is extremely detailed oriented and it shows up in their OS, all their software, their iPods, iPhones, Monitors, etc... Yes, you pay a bit more up front, about 5-15% but the resale value of Macs is still HUGE in 4-6 years compared to a PC, so it really doesn't matter.
This article was okay, but it missed most of the details. Macs run on BSD Unix and that's the primary reason there has never been a single virus... it has nothing to do with marketshare. Apple sells 31,500 Macs a day, and nobody can crack it... a kinda nice feature!
Lastly, Macs now run more software than any platform... they run all Windows software of course, but they run all Linux distros, Solaris and all the game consoles of last 3 decades.
A Mac is a fun, extremely powerful machine, there is no doubt.
This notion of the MAC being more expensive is really the hype of PC users. The MAC is NOT more expensive when you are buying feature for feature. The hardware, option for option is really close in price between MAC's and PC's. So, stop saying MAC's are more expensive!
You want more expensive? Let's talk about everyday life for a moment and factor THAT into the 'cost' of MAC's vs PC's. Cost is cost, and you need to include all aspects of computer ownership into the 'cost.' Mac's break down far less often than PC's and PC's as we ALL KNOW are far more prone to be infected with a virus that can at best annoy you, and at worst, destroy your hard drive and cause you to lose all your information. THAT is costly, buddy! Many times I have witnessed PC's melt down causing myriads of problems and in truth, the MAC doesn't really suffer from failed hardware as often. MAC's do suffer hardware failures to be sure but not like PC's.
So, don't say MAC's are more expensive. ALL things considered, they are far less expensive, more reliable, at this time no viruses, even after all the screaming and yelling about 'a new MAC virus *may* be on the loose.' None to date. Maybe most important in the cost debate is the ease of use and learning curve. MAC's are easier to learn and operate. You get things done faster because the software is usually written better for the MAC. The caveat here occasionally is Adobe who has been known at times to intentionally punish Apple and their users by holding back on keeping MAC software up to date. And, don't even try to deny that one Adobe. Even so, I have found the MAC to be a superior machine with a superior OS that is easier to use and more stable. In essence, MACS cost less by quite a margin.
To say the the mac is immune to any virus or threat, or has never happened, is plain and simple hogwash.
