Berlin - This day in World Cup history - July 10 July 10 1976 - Brazil's Edmilson is born. The defender, who played for French club Olympique Lyon at the time of the 2002 World Cup was in the Selecao team that beat Germany 2-0 in the final. He scored in the group phase against Costa Rica, but then disappointed against Turkey and was dropped against China. He returned into the side for the knockout stages and was then an influential member of the winning- team. 1982 - France, who went to the 1982 finals as one of the favourites but were beaten in the semi-finals by Germany on penalties, field an under-strength side in the Third Place play-off against Poland, who still have some of the players in their squad who finished third eight years earlier. Poland win an entertaining game 3-2. 1994 - In one of the all-time upsets in World Cup history Bulgaria beat Germany in the quarter-final of the World Cup in the US. The defending champions were leading 1-0 with just 15 minutes to go, but two quick goals for Bulgaria through Hristo Stoichkov and Yordan Letchkov turned things around and gave Bulgaria their biggest-ever World Cup success. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
