1950 - Brazil's Ademir becomes the first player to score four goals at the World Cup finals and end up on the winning side as favourites Brazil beat Sweden 7-1. In one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history though, Brazil fail to win the trophy as they lose their final match against Uruguay 2-1. A draw would have crowned them champions. (1950 was the only time that no final was played). Ernest Wilimowski scored four goals in 1938 for Poland, but his side were beaten 6-5 by Brazil.
1994 - Brazil beat the Netherlands 3-2 in a quarter-final played in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The South Americans lead 2-0 through Romario and Bebeto, but Dennis Bergkamp and Aaron Winter equalize for the Dutch. Branco scores the winner for the Selecao with nine minutes to go. Just over a week later Brazil win their fourth World Cup title by beating Italy on penalties in the final.
2000 - The World Cup qualifier between Zimbabwe and South Africa dissolves into chaos after South African Delron Buckley scores his side's second goal. Police fire tear-gas at the crowd after objects are thrown at the field. Fans attempt to disperse and in the stampede 13 die. Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe later blames the opposition.
