Owen criticizes Eriksson's single striker policy

London - England striker Michael Owen has strongly criticized Sven-Goran Eriksson's decision to play with Wayne Rooney as a single striker in the World Cup quarter-final defeat to Portugal. 'We've let a big opportunity slip. It's a major disappointment, getting knocked out by Portugal,' the Newcastle United striker told British television station ITV. Owen, who missed the match after rupturing ligaments in his right knee in England's final group match against Sweden, also felt Eriksson's tactics played a part in Rooney's dismissal for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho. 'You would suggest he's probably only got angry because of what's happened in the first hour of that game. It's a frustrating role to play.' Owen is unlikely to play again for the rest of the year due to his injury while Eriksson stepped down as coach of England after the penalty shootout defeat to Portugal to be replaced by former Middlesbrough coach Steve McClaren. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
