Ballack out of Portugal game - Borowski also doubtful
Jul 7, 2006, 10:11 GMT
Berlin - Midfielder Michael Ballack will miss Germany's match for third place against Portugal because of a knee injury, it was confirmed Friday.
The Germany captain has an inflamed tendon in the hollow of his left knee. 'The doctors have strongly advised against him playing,' the German football federation said.
Midfielder Tim Borowski is also a doubt for Saturday's match in Stuttgart after breaking off Friday training early with a foot injury.
Coach Juergen Klinsmann is already definitely without defender Per Mertesacker who has left the squad for surgery on his ankle while Arne Friedrich is out with a knee injury.
Klinsmann can at least count on midfielder Torsten Frings who returns from suspension while Oliver Kahn will make his first appearance of the tournament, standing in for number one goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.
The German team flies to Stuttgart from Berlin later Friday.
