Berlin - Germany striker Lukas Podolski was Friday named the young player of the World Cup by FIFA for his strong performances with the host country.
The 21-year-old, who will play with German champions Bayern Munich next season after his move from relegated Cologne, scored three times in Germany's run to the last four of the competition.
He netted twice in Germany's 2-0 second round victory over Sweden in Munich and also scored against Ecuador in the round of 16.
Podolski beat off competition from Cesc Fabregas, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Valencia and Tranquilo Barnetta for the award.
