1974 - Gerd Mueller scores the winner for Germany against the Netherlands in the 1974 World Cup final, giving the hosts their second title after 1954. It was 'Der Bomber's' 14th World Cup goal, beating the previous best-mark set by Just Fontaine of France in 1958. The German held the all-time scoring record till Germany 2006, when Brazilian forward Ronaldo scored his 15th at the World Cup finals to overtake Mueller.
1974 - Juergen Grabowski is born. The midfielder is a member of the German squad at the 1974 World Cup, having already been to the 1966 and 1970 finals. Although the hosts lose against East Germany at the 1974 finals they go on to qualify for the final, where they beat the Dutch 2-1.
1990 - Peter Shilton establishes a new world record for the number of games played with his 125th cap for England in the Third Place play- off against Italy. The English goalkeeper is beaten twice and his side loses 2-1. Shilton, who also played at the 1982 and 1986 finals announces his retirement from international football after the tournament.
