Blatter warns Brazil against complacency in 2014 World Cup bid
Jul 5, 2006, 13:46 GMT
Berlin - FIFA president Joseph Blatter has said there would an alternative to Brazil hosting the World Cup in 2014 should their programme not be up to scratch.
'You cannot say the decision has already been made because it hasn't,' Blatter told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. 'Other countries would be ready to step in at short notice if Brazil's programme is not what it should be.'
In order to share the World Cup, FIFA decided to rotate the competition among the confederations. South Africa defeated rival African bids to play host to the tournament in 2010, but with other South American countries allowing Brazil a clear run for 2014, Blatter is now worried that could lead to complacency.
'I've said Brazil must meet all requirements before we reach a decision,' he said. 'It's true that South America have put forward just one candidate, but only in two years' time will we find out if Brazil hosts the tournament.'
