Berlin - This day in World Cup history - July 6

July 6

1930 - German international Herbert Erhardt is born. The Fuerth defender is a member of the German squad at the 1954 finals, where the team causes one of the great upsets in World Cup history by winning their first world championship - beating a strong Hungarian side 3-2 in the final, even though they had lost a group game 8-3 two weeks earlier.

1969 - Fernando Redondo is born. The Argentine midfielder plays in the 1994 World Cup finals where the South Americans disappoint. After beating Greece and Nigeria in their two opening group games, the South Americans lose their third match against Bulgaria 2-0 to finish third in the group. They still advance to the round of 16, but are knocked out by Romania in a match they have to play without their regular forward line of Diego Maradona and Claudio Caniggia. Maradona had earlier been suspended for a doping offence, while Caniggia was injured.

1974 - Poland beats Brazil 1-0 in the game that nobody wants to play: the Third Place play-off. Grzegorz Lato scores his seventh goal of the tournament to finish top scorer, beating his compatriot Andrzej Szarmach and Dutchman Johan Neeskens by two goals. It was the Poles' best-ever placing at the finals, which they equalled in 1982 when they beat France in the play-off.
