Australia: no coaching deal with Houllier

Sydney - Australian football officials on Monday dismissed speculation that Frenchman Gerard Houllier is the new national team coach to get them to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. 'Contrary to media reports, the FFA has not signed an agreement with Gerard Houllier for the position of head coach. Talks are continuing with a number of candidates, including Gerard Houllier,' said said an FFA spokesman. World Cup revelation Australia are without a coach as Guus Hiddink, Socceroos' coach for just a year, moved on to Russia after his side dropped out in the second round in a last-minute 1-0 defeat to Italy. Houllier, manager of French league champions Olympique Lyon, has for months been courted by FFA president Frank Lowy. News reports Monday said Houllier was the new coach, but that Lowy has agreed to let him see out the remaining year of his contract with Lyon before taking over from Socceroos assistant coach Graham Arnold in 2007. In his six years with English side Liverpool, Houllier won the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup treble.
