Berlin - This day in World Cup history - July 3
July 3
1974 - Brazil and the Netherlands meet in Dortmund in their final group game in the second group phase. The Dutch need only to draw to qualify for the final (which in that year was contested by the two winners of the two second round groups). In a awesome display of Total Football the two Johans - Neeskens and Cruyff - score twice in the second half to give the Oranjies a 2-0 victory and a place in the final against Germany.
1986 - Argentine goalkeeper Oscar Ustari is born. Although the youngster did not play in any of Argentina's five matches at the 2006 World Cup finals, the Independiente players' inclusion in the squad was a remarkable a achievement given his age. Ustari has quite a pedigree when it comes to international football, having represented his country in the under-17 world championship in Finland in 2003 and being in the Argentina side that won the 2005 under-20 world championship in the Netherlands. Before being called up into Jose Pekerman's squad Ustari had only been called up once before. That was in March 2005, when he was a substitute against Mexico, but did not play.
1990 - The semi-final between Italy and Argentina goes into extra time and the teams play - and play - and play as referee Michel Vautrot gets carried away with the game and simply forgets to blow the whistle at the end of the first half of extra time. He plays eight minutes over the time. No goals are scored in the 40 minutes of extra time and the match ends 1-1. Argentina win 4-3 on penalties, but go on to lose the final 1-0 against Germany.
1998 - The host France take on Italy in the quarter-final, but as both sides fail to find the net, the game goes into extra time. Again neither side scores and the game has to be decided on penalties. The Italian side probably thought: why bother, as they go on to lose their third penalty shoot-out in a row at the finals. France go on to win the World Cup.
